Palestine : Hackers have taken down phone and Internet services

The main phone network in the West Bank and Gaza has suffered a sustained attack by computer hackers, the Palestinian Authority (PA) says. Mashour Abou Daqqa, the Palestinian telecoms minister, said the disruptions, which began Tuesday morning, came from various sources around the world, but had no detailed information. He said hackers used IP servers in Germany, China, and Slovenia to launch the attack.

Hack may be linked to rising regional tensions over the Palestinian Authority's successful move to acquire membership in Unesco on Monday. It also comes against the backdrop of new cross-border clashes along the border between Israel and Gaza. One Israeli civilian and at least 10 Palestinian militants were killed in the worst violence on that front in months. The fighting followed the launch of rocket salvos against Israeli territory last week. Israel retaliated with airstrikes.

Daqqa suggested its neighbour could be responsible for the attacks."Israel could be involved as it announced yesterday that it was considering the kind of sanctions it would impose on us." . Over the years, pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian computer hackers have fought running skirmishes, carrying out attacks on the other side. Engineers are working to resolve the problem.

Hackers have also shut down the Internet in the Palestinian territories before. In 2002, Wired reported that the Israeli army took over the offices of the leading Palestinian Internet service provider, Palnet, and shut down its operations. Services went back up after 24 hours.After then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak shut down the Internet and cellphones to quell unrest early this year, he was required, along with two of his aides, to pay $90 million in fines for damaging the country’s economy.

Battlefield 3 Compromised, Hackers Can Play Online without Using EA's Digital Distribution Platform

Hacking group manages to play online without using EA's digital distribution platform. Hacking and piracy group Razor1911 has reportedly enabled PC copies of Battlefield 3 to play online while bypassing EA's Origin service. DICE said in August that players would be required to have an Origin account to run even retail versions of the PC edition of the game, but that's no longer strictly the case, Gamasutra reports.

CAPTCHA System Penetrated, Cyber Security Have to Face a New Challenge

Researchers have figured out how to to crack captchas, making it possible to launch automated attacks against sites such as Microsoft, eBay and Digg where opening phony accounts could be turned into cash. Software written by researchers at Stanford University and Tulane University can interpret human speech well enough to crack audio captchas between 1.5% and 89% of the time - often enough to make sites that use them vulnerable to setting up false user accounts, the researchers say. Called Decaptcha, the program was able to decode Microsoft's audio captchas about half the time. It cracked the toughest audio captcha from reCAPTCHA just 1.5% of the time and Authorize.com's audio captchas 89% of the time. It solved eBay audio captchas 82% of the time, Microsoft 48.9% of the time, Yahoo 45.5% of the time and 42% of the time for Digg, say the researchers, headed up by Elie Bursztein, a post-doctoral researcher at Stanford.

Fedora 16 (Verne) is Coming With Lots of Big Changes

Fedora 16 is code-named Verne, for Jules Verne is coming with big changes. The beta version was released on the october. Fedora is both a great testbed for new technologies, and a good distro with a strong commitment to free (as in freedom) software. Fedora was the first, or among the first to roll outSELinux, a free Java environment (GNU Java, OpenJDK, and ecj) back before Sun's Java was converted to the GPL, PulseAudio, and Nouveau.

Fedora's QA Community Monkey, explains:-
"Fedora isn't only a test bed, it is a perfectly usable distro as a daily driver. It is going to be slightly less dependable and polished than Ubuntu for such use, in general. Everyone has a slightly different take on Fedora but I like to see it as being kind of a prototype, or maybe a first-year model; it's not exactly that we're not trying to build an awesome usable desktop / server distro, but we tend to introduce a lot of very Shiny New Stuff and do it on a very aggressive schedule. And of course we don't provide any non-free drivers or worry overmuch about making sure they work, which can be a consideration. I run the next-stable-version on my desktop most of the time and it's totally workable, and I run my servers on current-stable-Fedora. But there may be the odd occasion where something breaks, and version upgrades can be a bit bumpy."
F16 introduces a number of significant changes: GRUB 2 replaces legacy GRUB, HAL is gone and replaced by udisks, upower, and libudev, migration from SysV init to native Systemd continues(scheduled for completion in F17), and a number of cloud utilities and OpenStack are included. btrfs, the much-hyped filesystem that is supposed to become the Linux default, was supposed to be the default for Verne, but it's still not ready. The main snag is the lack of a dependable, fully-functional fsck, so look for it in F17. You can still use it if you like because it is an option in the installer when you set up partitions. And, as Adam Williamson revealed, "btrfs has been available as a Sekrit Option in the installer for several releases, you make it available by passing a kernel parameter to the installer. For a while this was, awesomely, 'icantbelieveitsnotbtr', but now it's just plain 'btrfs'."
