Online Bank Hacking Case, 2 Guys Sent for 4 Years Imprisonment

The ringleaders of a major organised criminal network that stole nearly £3m from online bank accounts have each been jailed for four years and eight months after a Croydon Crown Court ruling. Ukrainian nationals Yuriy Konovalenko and Yevhen Kulibaba were sentenced after an investigation by the Met's Police Central eCrime Unit (PCeU), codenamed Operation Lath. So far the Met has jailed 13 of the gang's members.
The PCeU argued that the prison sentences show the police to be committed to bringing online fraudsters to justice, but the length of time Konovalenko and Kulibaba will serve could be viewed as too short.

#opdemocracia DDoS Attack On The National Electoral Council By Anonymous

Hacker group Anonymous announced to carry out an attack on the country's electoral authorities Sunday.

The Electoral Observation Mission (MOE) confirmed their website had been hacked after the website had been offline for hours of Saturday. The organization knew to restore the website in the evening. The Colombian branch of international hacker group Anonymous, that has carried out similar Denial of Servise (DoS) attacks on government website denied responsibility. According to anonymous, ColombianH was responsible for the attack on MOE. This was not confirmed by ColombianH on their Twitter page.
Anonymous did announce to carry out "#opdemocracia," a DoS attack on the National Electoral Council, Colombia's highest electoral authority. During elections in 2010, the country's Registry Offica, responsible for the organization of the election and counting of the ballots was hacked, but these attacks did not come from insurgent hacker groups, but from the offices of the National Police and intelligence agency DAS.

The Nitro Attacks Stealing Secrets from the Chemical Industry

Symantec prepares a a report on the ongoing malware report and named it "Nitro Attacks". By using this an attacker can pull secretes information from chemical industries, companies, the attack is mainly based on social engineering.
An Analysis report is Saying:-
This "nitro" attack has an interesting blend of malware techniques that does show some ingenuity. It used a socially engineered email message with a malicious attachment. While the malware component of the attack was a recycled version of the common remote access Trojan (RAT) PoisonIvy, it was often packaged in an encrypted archive to evade email gateway detection. Nitro portrayed itself as a necessary Adobe Flash or anti-virus update, using your desire to be secure to trick you into installing the malware. Like many other targeted attacks that have come to light recently, this one attacks our weakest link, our humanity.
One of the behaviors of the Trojan was to collect password hashes from compromised Windows computers. If you haven't already gotten the memo, it is an extremely bad idea to give your users administrative rights.
Malware cannot access the Windows cache of passwords, which almost always has admin credentials included, if it does not have administrative rights. Simply restricting permissions would be enough to stunt the spread of an attack like this. Additionally, the behavior of this malware is quite easy for HIPS or behavioral anti-virus to detect and block. With the multitude of techniques being used by the bad guys, analyzing the behavior of applications is critical.
The command and control for this Trojan was located on a virtual hosted server in the United States. Symantec's investigation shows that the person who owns this instance, Covert Grove, is based in the Hebei region of China. In too many high profile organizations, IT security and their users have an adversarial relationship. Additionally, IT often does not use the full capabilities of the tools they are purchasing out of fear of false positives. Blocking suspicious attachments, using proactive detection technologies and educating users could all stop this type of attack from succeeding. If you weren't one of the victims, this is a great lesson on what you should be doing to protect against the next attack.

Google TV Update For Android 3.1 (Honeycomb)

Google announced on its Google TV blog Friday that the platform will be upgraded to Android 3.1(otherwise known as Honeycomb) for Sony devices Sunday, with the Logitech Revue set-top box getting its upgrade "soon thereafter." What will you get with this software upgrade to Android? Google says it's "much simpler." Its customization capabilities will go a long way toward alleviating the awkwardness of its first iteration, which Google admits was "not perfect."
And the addition of the Android Market will open up a variety of applications, with the promise of more -- perhaps thousands more -- on the way. One welcome improvement will be an easier ability to search across all the TV shows at your disposal. With this update, Google's trying to answer that age-old question, "What's on?" If Google can pull that off, it could be a powerful thing indeed. The company says it has learned from its mistakes with the first version of Google TV and is "committed to find the best way to discover and engage with the high-quality entertainment on your television." So does that mean Google TV will be able to find all the shows from whichever cable or satellite provider you're subscribing to, or from the web via all of the apps within Google TV, such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and HBO Go? Maybe. Of course, Google plans to improve Google TV's search across YouTube, its own video streaming service.
In the blog post, Google also hinted at future software updates (Ice Cream Sandwich, anyone?) and new devices "on new chipsets from multiple hardware partners." Hey, this is getting interesting.
We'll have to reserve judgment until we can install this software update on our Logitech Revue box, but for now, clearly this update has great potential. It makes perfect sense for Google -- purveyor of Android, the Chrome browser, YouTube and by the way, the world's search expert -- to leverage these powerful capabilities in its TV set-top. The hurdle Google needs to navigate is not so much a technical or software one, but a matter of negotiating and arm-twisting of content providers. Will the company gain cooperation from TV networks and movie studios, allowing their content to be searchable on the Google TV platform? That's the key to Google TV's success.

Norway Satellite Security May be Compromised

The Landsat-7 and the Terra AM-1 satellites are used to monitor the earth’s climate and terrain. A report on the attacks looked into what the risks would have been if the satellites had been used for other purposes. Dr Markus Kuhn from Cambridge University told the media whilst it is unsure whether the satellites had a “serious security problem”, he argues the attacks are the result of “negligence by its designers or operators.”
“It has long been basic computer science textbook knowledge how to implement “cryptographic end to end message authentication”, a very effective technique to prevent unauthorized parties executing commands on remote devices.”
“This story appears to be little more than someone gaining temporary access to some remote computer that steers a satellite dish,” he continued. Nottingham Trent University’s Professor John Walker lists the problems of the systems relying on command-and-control from computers based on the ground, which “opens up an opportunity to circumvent security, depending on how it is being applied.” Nevertheless, Amichai Shulman, Imperva’s Chief Technology Officer, spoke of the need to update security on the satellites. “This is yet another wake up call for these organisations to gradually abandon their older model and start deploying in-depth layered security into their information systems, much like the commercial organizations do,” he told the Media.
